Emma has several mentoring offers available, from time based 1:1 sessions, to courses and free walk n talks.

Walk n talks

Free 30 minute phone calls for people not currently working in service design.

  • Walk n talks are free 30 minute unstructured conversations over the old fashioned telephone - ideally while walking through nature.

  • Emma releases slots into her Calendly when she has space in her diary, usually uploading at the start of the month. Just book a slot that works for you, she’ll call you at the scheduled time and you can ask/discuss anything you like.

  • Walk and talks are for people not currently working in the service design industry. You might be a recent graduate or a career shifter that wants to better understand how to enter the industry.

Service design mentoring

Paid, time based mentoring for people working in service design who need support.

  • Service design mentoring is designed to give you a helping hand in your career as and when you need it. You can buy as much or as little time with Emma as you need and she’ll help and support you based on her knowledge and experience. Emma uses a coaching approach but is not a qualified coach.

  • You buy time. You can buy as much or as little as you like in 30 minute increments. This time can be used whenever you need, schedules permitting, within 30 days of purchase.

Before the first session you’ll share with Emma what you need help with. Sessions are run remotely over Google Meet.

If you’re unsure how much time you need, Emma can provide guidance.

  • People working in the service design industry who need support.

You might be a senior designer looking to move into leadership and looking for an outside perspective on the skills you need to develop.

Perhaps you’re working as a solo service designer in an organisation and you’re struggling to get a grip on the best way to run a particular exercise or approach a particular problem.

Maybe you’re a freelancer who’s taken on a project solo and needs a sounding board.

  • Buying more time upfront reduces the cost:

    30 minutes: £45 + VAT
    60 minutes: £85 + VAT
    90 minutes: £120 + VAT
    120 minutes: £150 + VAT

Anyone outside the UK is exempt from paying VAT.

You can always buy more time at any point. You can also buy time as a gift to someone you know.

Going freelance

A paid course for people looking to move into freelance service design.

  • Through this course, Emma will share everything she’s learned about getting into freelance service design, in her usual open and honest way. She covers the logistics and hard facts, along with the emotional aspects - sharing personal experiences to highlight common pitfalls.

The course covers eight topic areas including: Building a network, different ways to freelance, setting up, finding work, money, marketing, managing relationships & how life will change.

The course also offers an optional add on of 3x 1 hour 1:1 mentoring sessions covering building your confidence, developing your offer and selling yourself.

  • The course is delivered over 2 sessions, each one 1.5 hours long covering 4 of the 8 topics.

The sessions are part presentation, part discussion.

Each cohort consists of 12 people to keep the group size intimate enough for meaningful discussion throughout the sessions.

At the end of the group sessions you can decide if you want to book the 1:1 mentoring.

These are activity-based sessions with homework in between. The subject areas have been selected to help tackle the biggest barriers people face when they are deciding whether to move into freelance.

  • The course if for anyone considering making the move into freelance. While you don’t need to work in service design, working in and around user centred design in general is recommended.

The course is focused on being freelance, not doing service design. It will not cover best practice methods and approaches.

While the course has not be designed specifically for a UK context, Emma lives and works in the UK. Most content will be transferable to other markets but not all.

  • The course costs £90 + VAT (for UK participants, anyone outside the UK is exempt from paying VAT).

If, for unforeseen circumstances, you find yourself unable to attend post payment - you can defer your place. I wont be able to offer refunds.

Emma also offers an optional addition to the course; 3x 1:1 mentoring sessions covering:

    1. Finding your confidence

    2. Defining your offer

    3. Selling yourself

These are priced at £250 + VAT for the set of 3.

  • The January 2024 cohort is full. The next course dates have not yet been released. Join the waitlist to be the first to be offered a place when future dates are released.
